My friend Jim Haim has asked me to post the following information for 2 workshops he is hosting this year. His company, COBTogether (Creating Organic Buildings Together), offers natural building workshops for people of all ages. They bring people together to teach the empowering skills of sustainable building.
No previous building experience is required. You can learn more about these workshops and Cob in general on his website: www.cobtogether.com. Please contact him directly through his website if you are interested.
June 23-30, 2007 Comprehensive Cottage Construction $600
In this workshop you will learn how to build a hybrid cob-strawbale structure. These eight days include all of the Basics of Cob Building workshop material plus the following . . . In addition to cob basics and practice, you will pour an earthen floor, construct a straw bale wall, discuss passive solar energy design principles, and tour a finished naturally built home. Participants will also receive detailed instruction on naturally built small cottage construction from laying the foundation to application of a living roof. This extended workshop allows for a deeper sense of community, and the opportunity to sink into the beautiful Williams Valley (an afternoon off is scheduled mid week).
July 20-23, 2007 Basics of Cob Building $300
Working with cob for four days allows learning to take hold in your body.
During this workshop you will learn how to test soil for building, mix cob, build cob walls, and learn the basics of earthen plastering. While working with cob instruction will be given on window placement, use of small spaces, alcoves and niches, benches, and interior wall designs. Those look great. Do you know how I could find out about any workshops that may be happening closer to where I live (Atlanta area)?
Thanks

Katie,
I don’t know where to find Cob workshops for certain in your area. I would check out www.Greenbuilder.com and see what they have in the schedule. You might also look at The Last Straw on line. Good luck.

There is a place in Tennessee called “The Farm” that I’m going to check out as soon as it warms up a bit. I live in NW Georgia, a couple of hours from Atlanta. As far as I have seen, this is the closest source we have in Georgia. Here’s a link http://www.thefarm.org/etc/courses.html If you find someplace else close to us, please post
