For some reason, I did not get the people signing up for the plastering workshop that I had planned. My guess is that most of you plan to hire someone to plaster your house, so why bother taking a class to learn how to do it. I get that, yet I can’t seem to jive that with the number of plastering DVDs I sell. So, the next idea is that the cost of the workshop is too much for you all during these hard times. Well, how does FREE sound?
Here’s the deal: I want your help in plastering the straw bale buildings that we built in last year’s workshops. I also like teaching and I have a great time during these workshops. SO, let’s put those two things together and plaster some buildings! I will pay for everything other than the food, you will be on your own for that. I will provide you with a kitchen (small but practical) and a place to camp. You bring your willingness to work and learn.
It is not only very rare that you will find an opportunity to plaster all three coats of plaster in one weekend (normally you need to wait at least a week in between coats) but even more rare that you can do it for FREE!
I will be limiting the number of people who can sign up for this workshop, so if you are finally falling off of the fence about attending, sign up now before I close off enrollment.
LOCATION: Jacksonville, Oregon
DATES: May 29-31, 2009

Hi William. It is in Jacksonville, Oregon. I guess that would have been a good thing to write on the blog! I’ll edit the entry to include the location and how to sign up.

Hi Andrew, I’m seriously interested in helping you plaster (and learning something too!) but not sure if my work schedule will allow. Any chance you can sign me up tentatively and I’ll either cancel or confirm as soon as I know?
Cheers, Steve

I’d like to attend but I’m a caregiver to a friend and I live in Seattle. I’m looking into building a straw bale home here in Washington State. I don’t have the property yet. I do own land in Northern Neveda and I’d like to build there but I have to live here in Washington within a three hour drive of Seattle for at least the next few years.
After building a home for family here in Washington State, my goal is building homes in the Dominican Republic for people without good shelter. I want to setup a construction business there. I hope to do this within the next 2-6 years.

Hi Andrew,
I filled out the form to register for the free plastering workshop and did not receive any confirmation. Will I receive something from you? Or maybe my form didn’t go through.
My wife and I are planning on building a straw bale home near Spokane, WA. Thanks,

Hay Andrew,
Its Jesse from the New York class. My wife and I are trying to put together the funds to come out for the plastering. We dont know if we can make the 2500 mile trip, but if things work out we would love to join. Looking forward to seeing your place. Thanks Jesse

What a fantastic offer! That’s not something you see every day….a trade been taught for free. You should have no problems with getting people involved with this.

Vince, Not sure who Steve is, but I can answer your question. We will do the scratch coat on the inside of a bale cabin. The brown coat on the interior and exterior of another cabin, and the finish coat on the exterior of another cabin. If we have time, we can do finish on the interior of another cabin. That will depend on how far we get with the other stages.

Hay Jesse (I like how you wrote “hay” by the way)!!! Nice to hear from you. I’d be great to see you again. Hope you can make it.

Anyone driving down to the workshop from Washington State? I live in Seattle. What public transportation is close to the site? Still not sure I can make it, I’m a caregiver so I’m looking for someone to take over my duties ATM. Anyone doing straw bale in western Washington? or east of the mountains?

Hi Brett. There is no public transportation to the site. It is a bout 15 minute out of town in the country where no buses run. You could get as close as Jacksonville on PT, but would have to get a ride or a cab from there. Carpooling could work well though. Hopefully someone from your area is headed South with room in the car.

Hi Andrew -
Does the workshop cover full days Friday Saturday & Sunday? Since we live on the East Coast, I’m figuring out whether it’s cost effective to fly over for the workshop. Also would need to schedule flights around the proper time frame. Thanks.

The workshop will run from 9am on Friday to about 4pm on Sunday. If you want to come, please sign up on my workshop site: http://www.StrawBaleWorkshops.com and I will send you a “what to bring and how to get there” letter. Hope you can make it.

Will there be similar offers in the future??

Hi Joe. I may run one more free plastering workshop this summer. I don’t know. The workshop refereed to in this post actually happened last year. I forgot to put a date on it I guess. Sorry. I’ll post the new workshop (if it happens) on http://www.StrawBaleWorkshops.com where I list all my workshops.
