    Andrew,
    We have a straw bale home, due in part to your website and suggestions. A belated thank you. The home is lovely, energy efficient, and we would do the same construction again. We are looking to refinance the home and are finding many of the national mortgage brokers do not write mortgages on straw bale homes. Do you have any suggestions on companies that we may contact that do. Thanks in advance

    Hi Bruce. So glad that you are happy with your home. It can be difficult to find banks that are willing to work with bale homes simply because the bankers don’t understand the home they are working with. One thing you might try is to explain to them that straw bale homes are not unusual “anymore.” In fact, there is a provision in the NATIONAL building code (the IRC, which stands for International Residential Code) that recognizes straw bale construction as a viable construction technique. This may help. I also try to work with forward thinking, progressive banks that are interested in cornering a new and growing market. Finally, you can try working with local credit unions as well as they are typically more invested in the local community than larger banks. If, in the worst case scenario, you cannot find anyone to work with you, you can try refinancing your post and beam or timber frame home (assuming you have a non load bearing home). If they ask about your insulation (which I doubt they will for a refi), simply state” cellulose insulation, which is entirely true. Just be sure to read ALL of the paperwork that comes with the loan in advance of signing to make sure that there are no specific exclusions or wording that would put you in default because of it being straw bale.

    I cannot afford this lovely home but I need a nontoxic home to recover and wanted to know if you would allow. Me to rent I have a condo I am selling when I move which will probably sell for 240k. My name is Andrea Porter my son is Noah Cook and my daughter is Emma Cook recently divorced son and I have mcs no pets no perfume no smoking no burning clean only with vinegar and organic olive oil Castile soap and baking soda we need a nontoxic house to rent or rent to own so badly the new condo I bought in port ludlow wa is making us very ill

    Hi Andrea. Unfortunately, the house for sale post is from 2007 and I have no idea what the status of that home is today. It’s not, nor has it ever been mine. I simply posted the for sale notice to help the owners sell the home. I’m sorry I can’t help you. Wishing you success in finding the perfect home and soon.
