Community Spotlight: A Family’s Straw Bale Home Built from the Land

There’s something special about homes built from the heart and from the land they stand on. In this Community Spotlight, we’re honored to share the story of Jackie and her late husband, Jim, whose dedication to straw bale construction created not just a beautiful and efficient home but a lasting legacy of craftsmanship, sustainability, and love.

Plaque over the front door reads: Our house is built of straw and beams, Our home is built of love and dreams.

From Vision to Reality

“Our home is so comfortable and beautiful. Many people comment on how warm and quiet our home is.

My husband, Jim, planned this project for a long while, many years ago, planting trees on this part of our farm for a future building site. He did a few builds with experienced straw bale builders, and then started teaching the techniques at seminars and some hands-on courses.”

Built by Hand and Heart

“In 2003, he built a load-bearing straw shop. In 2009, he started building our own home, a post and beam structure, in his spare time. We were still farming at the time. He logged trees on our property, bought a sawmill, and made his own lumber. He made large beams and smaller boards as well. The straw is also from our own farm.”

Years of Dedication

“By 2012, our son and family decided to come back to the farm. Although we didn't have the house complete, we moved into the basement. We had a lot yet to do, including the stucco, woodwork, and kitchen cupboards.

Finally, in 2013, it was complete, including a finished basement. We had 13 years in our new home together before he passed away in February of 2025.”

A Home Full of Gratitude

“Every day I enjoy this home, and I'm so grateful for all that went into it. I'm comfortable in it alone, and also sharing it with friends and family.”

Honoring a Lasting Legacy

Jackie’s story is a beautiful reminder of what straw bale construction can be at its best: rooted in the land, shaped by patient hands, and filled with the warmth of family and purpose. The home that she and Jim built together continues to inspire others to build with care, intention, and love.
