Your Hosts

We are the Pilorget family: Dillon, Sara, Shiloh (6), and Francine (4). Dillon discovered straw bale building in 2017 while recovering from a brain injury, and naturally, it seemed like a great idea. After convincing Sara of straw bale’s merits, Dillon attended a workshop in Temecula, California, and from that point on could not imagine building a safe, comfortable, healthy home for our family in any other way.

At that time we had no property and no kids, but life changes. We bought two acres and spent nine months clearing a build site and designing a footprint. We broke ground two weeks before Shiloh was born and have been working on our house most every day since. (Fun fact: even once Shiloh started sleeping through the night, we still had to wake up in the wee hours to add fuel to the diesel heaters drying our rained-on straw bales. The things we do for our bales.)

We moved into our very unfinished house in September 2021, and Francine was born one month later. Our path has not been without difficulties, but it has been a joy and a privilege to see our house dreams come to life.

The Build

Our home is 1,600 interior square feet, with another 300 square feet in the straw bale walls. The kitchen is the center of our home and is where we spend the most time as a family. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms, although we still have work to do to finish them.

To us, our property is in the perfect location. We can reach a grocery store in six minutes but still feel nicely secluded. During the workshop, our blackberries might be ripening. Our girls often have purple fingers from picking all summer long.

A few other details about our home. We use rainwater exclusively and store 10,000 gallons in tanks behind the house. Oregon’s winter showers bring summer get-your-body-clean showers. We heat our home with a masonry heater and would be happy to tell you about it. It is a beastly contraption in our living space, but we love its warmth.

Your Stay

There is plenty of room for tents and RVs on our two-acre property. July in the Willamette Valley is usually pleasant, with warmer days followed by comfortable evenings. About an acre of the property is wooded, which creates shade and quiet space to relax after a day of building.

We love to cook and will serve hearty meals, good snacks, and plenty of treats. We are used to hosting friends with allergies or dietary restrictions and will make sure everyone has something they can enjoy.

Local Attractions

Clackamas River Trail — This nearby trail offers forest hikes, river views, and steady elevation changes. It is a good choice for stretching your legs after workshop days.

Oregon City Brewing Company — This local spot offers a relaxed atmosphere to gather, featuring good food trucks and a wide selection of beers. Enjoy a low-key evening with fellow participants.

Willamette Falls Viewpoint— A few minutes from downtown, this overlook gives you a clear view of the falls and the river. It is a quiet place to slow down and take in the area before or after the workshop.

Travel

Portland International Airport (PDX) — About 40 minutes by car. A ride with Uber or Lyft is usually around $60.

Public Transit — The MAX light rail reaches a station about halfway to our home, which lowers the cost of the rideshare needed for the rest of the trip.

We will help connect participants for ride sharing when possible.

Nearby Accommodations

Best Western Rivershore Hotel — A reliable and comfortable option about fifteen minutes from our home. Sara’s dad stays there on every visit and recommends it.

Portland Lodging — Many additional hotels, inns, and vacation rentals are available in Portland if you prefer more choices or plan to explore the city.
