Your Hosts

We’re Reid and Emily, and we can’t wait to welcome you to Sandpoint, Idaho—the crown jewel of the Gem State (yes, we’re biased, but give us a week and you might be too). Nestled between the Selkirk and Monarch mountain ranges and resting on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille—Idaho’s largest lake and the fifth-deepest in the country—Sandpoint is where small-town charm meets wild, Idaho beauty.

Our property sits on the edge of town just in the County limits, where the historic, artsy, ski-and-lake vibe gives way to woods and water. It’s 2.5 acres tucked into a family property, and for Reid, it’s quite literally “coming home.”

After graduating from Portland State University with a master’s in architecture, Reid returned to Sandpoint to start a firm focused on sustainable, community-centered design. Falling in love with straw bale building—and the ethos behind it—was inevitable (we’ll call it love at first insulation). So when the chance came to design and build our own home, it was an obvious choice. Hosting a workshop combines both his craft and his passion, and gives us a chance to share it all with you. Emily is excited to learn about bale plastering and connect with people from all walks of life.

Having attended a strawbale workshop himself and then helping a former workshop attendee build his strawbale home, Reid is excited to create an experience inspired by those who taught and inspired him, with our own Idaho twist. Expect full days of learning, building, and community. Between sessions, cool off with a swim in Lake Pend Oreille, hop on your mountain bike for a quick ride through nearby Pine Street Woods (less than a mile from the property), or relax with some music (instruments not included), yard games, and good company as the sun sets behind the mountains.

The Build

Our 1,100-square-foot home will be nestled among the trees, with views of our family’s apple orchard just beyond. The design blends modern efficiency with natural materials — the kind of thoughtful detailing you’d expect from an architect who believes in letting the land lead the way.

Straw bales sourced from a local North Idaho farmer will insulate the walls, while berming and landscaping will tuck the home gently into its surroundings. Larger trees cleared from our current property will be repurposed into beams and finishes, ensuring that every piece of the project has a place and a thoughtful purpose.

We’ve learned so much from past workshops and can’t wait to share this next step with you—building something tangible together (and maybe even sparking the idea that you can do the same someday).

Your Stay

Camping will be available right on the property with our large, flat field perfect for tents, with space for a few camper vans (please contact us early if you plan to bring one so we can make sure everyone fits comfortably). You’ll likely share the space with our local deer herd, wild turkeys, the occasional moose, and our two slightly less-wild dogs, Hobbes and Birdie.

Meals will feature hearty, healthy ingredients, with plenty of snacks on hand (Emily, being from the Midwest, holds firm to the belief that no one should ever leave a table hungry). We’re happy to accommodate dietary needs when possible—just let us know early so we can plan accordingly.

Evenings are for relaxing around the fire, sharing stories, and soaking up the kind of quiet you can only find in North Idaho.
